This two-story building combines pet-centric services and spaces to address the lack of cafes welcoming dogs in Vancouver. Most of the restaurants or cafe in British Columbia DO NOT generally allow pets in food service establishments. However, the growing popularity of dogs and “dog cafes” internationally inspired this project.
The first floor houses a pet cafe where well-behaved dogs can accompany their owners, while still following regulations. Only food made exclusively for canine consumption is served, avoiding violations. Upstairs, a pet supply store supplies all pet needs. The rooftop was transformed into an indoor-outdoor playground and park for families to socialize.
Covered and open areas allow play year-round with views of the mountains. Together these businesses and recreational space create a much-needed hub welcoming both pets and their owners in the community.
User Identification
The user identification of this building interior design is primarily pet owners and their dogs, as well as families with children who can benefit from the recreational space. The design aims to cater to the needs and preferences of pet owners who want to spend time with their dogs in a welcoming and regulated environment.
Additionally, families seeking a pet-friendly space with recreational amenities can also utilize the indoor-outdoor playground and park on the rooftop. The design aims to create a hub that serves the community by accommodating pets and their owners while complying with health codes and regulations.
About the Materials
This design aims to create a warm, spacious feel through natural materials and curved motifs. Sustainable wood elements like wood slat accents and textured furniture offer textural contrast to bright white walls. Navy and beige upholstery and soft furnishings provide a calming navy-meets-coastal colour palette, accented by yellow details reminiscent of a loyal companion.
Besides, as dogs perceive primary colours as blue and yellow, these shades are emphasized throughout to create a visually stimulating space. All materials prioritize pet-friendly qualities, from easy-to-clean fabrics to scratch-resistant flooring. Banquettes and custom built-ins feature rounded edges for comfort and flow, transporting four-legged friends to carefree spaces throughout play.
Site Analysis
Mount Pleasant has a high density of licensed dogs at 1,663 licensed dogs per square km. This is the 4th highest density in the city. However, the actual dog population is likely higher since city-wide licensing compliance was estimated at only 38-66% based on survey data. Mount Pleasant’s residential neighbourhoods provide many houses and apartments suitable for dog ownership. Its central location within Vancouver also makes it convenient for dog owners to access services. The high licensed dog density indicates dogs are a common pet among Mount Pleasant residents. With limited designated off-leash access relative to the neighbourhood’s size, local dog owners may be underserved.
Concept
The design concept revolves around the profound connection between the balloon and the owner, mirroring the bond between the dog and the pet owner. The concept aims to create an environment that symbolizes the joy, freedom, and shared experiences that come with the companionship of a pet.Inspired by the lightness and playfulness of a balloon, the design embraces whimsical elements, open spaces, and vibrant colours to evoke a sense of carefree delight.
Through thoughtfully designed interactive displays, personalized name tags for each pet, and plentiful cozy seating nooks, the concept fosters opportunities for pet owners and their dogs to connect with one another on a deeper level. The space is intended to help create special moments of play, bonding, and shared happiness between each guardian and their loyal companion. The uplifting design seeks to celebrate and honor the unique relationship between owner and pet, embodying the same joyful, carefree spirit that comes with watching a balloon float through the sky – reminding all who visit of life’s simplest pleasures.
